The Board of Commissioners is continuously evaluating and evolving Township priorities to meet the needs of the Abington community. Each year, the Commissioners conduct goal sessions to establish funding priorities for the fiscal year.
In 2019, the top three priorities are:
- Developing a comprehensive capital parks and recreation facilities plan including establishing inclusive facilities and related programs;
- Developing a comprehensive Traffic Safety program, and;
- Developing a comprehensive Township wide storm water master plan.
In addition to the above budget priorities, the Board of Commissioners continuously works with the Office of the Township Manager to ensure that Township policies are comprehensive, accountable and transparent.

In May 2019 , the Board of Commissioner approved the update to the Township's Comprehensive Plan. The Township has contracted with the Montgomery County Planning Commission (MCPC) for these efforts, who the Township has a planning assistance agreement with for the past 11 years.
The mission of the Comprehensive Plan is to define the goals and objectives for the future of the Township and chart the path through which these goals can be realized. Comprehensive planning is critical to understanding community assets and challenges; responding to changing demographics; maintaining fiscal balance and project priorities; and planning for short-term and long-term goals.
The Township established a Comprehensive Plan Committee comprised of experts in various fields to develop a strategy to complete the Plan over the next 18 months. There will be various way to participate and community meetings are being planned throughout the Township.
Abington Township Board of Commissioners is considering the creation of an Economic Development Corporation. An Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is a quasi-governmental non-profit corporation, foundation or association whose mission is to provide economic development to a targeted geographical area.
The Parks and Open Space Facilities plan will be a chapter within in the Comprehensive Plan Update- "Vision 2035." This chapter will inventory and analyze the extensive land and facilities that comprise the parks and recreation system today, while making recommendations for preserving, enhancing, and expanding the system to 2025 and beyond. Among other things, the chapter will produce conceptual master plans for selected parks, while making recommendations about more detailed park planning to follow the comprehensive plan.
The purpose of the storm water management master plan is to identify storm water responsibilities and gaps, identify areas of focus, prioritize planning and improvements, evaluate funding and implementation options, including storm water user fees to address flooding an MS 4 related requirements.
In April 2019, the Abington Board of Commissioners awarded the contract to prepare the Township's Comprehensive Stormwater Management Plan in the amount of $146, 300 to Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions, Inc. of Blue Bell, PA.
